The Alpine Formula One team piled pressure on Australian rookie Jack Doohan on Thursday by signing Argentine Franco Colapinto as a reserve ready to replace him.

Colapinto finished 2024 with five points after replacing Logan Sargeant in August. “Now, it is time for a new chapter, and to take on this challenge with BWT Alpine Formula One Team is truly an honor,” Colapinto said in the team's statement Thursday.

Signing Colapinto is a solid bet for Alpine, but there's no question it puts a spotlight on its 2025 driver before the season even begins.

With the incoming Sainz already having signed a multi-year deal, 21-year-old Colapinto's F1 future was very much up in the air, with the Argentine facing the prospect of at least two seasons on the sidelines at Williams due to driver contracts.

On Thursday, the BWT Alpine Formula 1 Team announced that it had reached a multi-year deal with Williams to sign Colapinto to a reserve and test driver role for this season. The move would appear to put Colapinto in line for a seat at Alpine should anything happen to—or the team decide to move on from—drivers Pierre Gasly or Jack Doohan.
