Toyota's futuristic Woven City project in Japan is almost complete and ready to welcome its first residents. The city, built on a former car factory site, is a $10 billion bet by Toyota. It has been designed as a "living laboratory" where residents can test out innovative projects.

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to move in the first 100 residents of a futuristic city at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan by as soon as this fall, but declined to specify how much the ambitious project is costing the company.

Beginning in fall 2025, 100 residents known as “weavers” will move to the city, with that number expected to expand to 360 during phase one. Eventually, Toyota says, up to 2,000 people will reside in the city. They will primarily be employees of Toyota or Toyota’s Woven by Toyota mobility tech company.

The company broke ground on a test site about a year later, and last October, the company wrapped up construction of phase one, which Toyota announced this week at CES 2025. Later this year, the ribbon will come off Toyota's Woven City,
